Data Center Dynamics covered DataBank’s acquisition of 85 acres in Culpeper, Virginia, for a new 192MW data center campus featuring three two-story buildings across 1.4 million square feet. The project includes a 300MW on-site substation from Dominion Energy and represents DataBank’s expansion into Virginia’s growing data center corridor.
CEO Raul Martynek noted that Northern Virginia remains one of the world’s most important data center markets, with development expanding southward into areas like Culpeper due to available land, utility capacity, and existing fiber infrastructure. The campus will utilize DataBank’s Universal Data Hall Design optimized for high-density workloads.
“As the market continues to grow, we expect data center development to expand southward, and Culpeper is an ideal location given the plentiful land, utility capacity, and existing fiber and data center infrastructure in the region.”
— Raul K. Martynek, CEO of DataBank
The first building, designated IAD5, will be located at 14601 Germanna Highway offering 40MW across 180,000 square feet. DataBank currently operates three Virginia facilities in Ashburn and McLean totaling 52.6MW across 368,350 square feet.
Culpeper County has attracted multiple data center developers recently, including Amazon, CloudHQ, Peterson Companies, and others planning similar large-scale campus developments in the region.
