DataBank doubled the size of its South Lake data center in Lenexa, Kansas, reflecting Kansas City’s emergence as a major data hub within the rapidly expanding digital economy. The facility leases secure, high-power server and cloud space to companies running banking apps, AI tools, and other critical digital services.
The expansion’s first completed data hall spans 17,000 square feet—nearly four basketball courts—and sold out immediately.
Two additional data halls are under construction with completion expected in six months. This growth aligns with Kansas City’s broader data center momentum, including Port KC’s recent approval of up to $100 billion in private funding for the metro’s potentially largest data infrastructure project.
Kansas City’s rapid growth in digital services supports essential industries including healthcare, finance, and education, positioning the metro at the center of the “Silicon Prairie.” Data centers provide maximum security through guards, cameras, mantraps, and biometric scanners, along with uninterrupted power, efficient cooling, and redundancy.
DataBank’s Lenexa location uses Evergy electricity backed by diesel generators, with a closed-loop water-based cooling system that rarely draws additional resources, addressing environmental concerns about energy consumption and water use.
