The Information TV host Akash Pasricha sat down with DataBank CEO Raul Martynek for a wide-ranging conversation sparked by the headline-grabbing compute deal between Anthropic and SpaceX. Martynek offers a grounded, market-driven read on what the agreement actually means and what it says about where the data center industry is headed.
Martynek’s take on the deal is straightforward: it’s less a strategic partnership than a supply-demand match. xAI’s Grok has lost momentum, usage is down and key founders have departed, leaving significant excess capacity sitting idle at the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis. Anthropic, meanwhile, is growing revenue and usage at roughly 80 times last year’s levels and hitting compute constraints as a result. The deal makes sense for both sides.
“AI demand moves on a quarterly basis, but data centers are built on multi-year cycles. Closing that gap is one of the defining challenges facing the industry right now.”
— Raul Martynek, CEO, DataBank
Martynek also notes that AI companies burn through enormous amounts of power, GPUs, tokens, and compute, and that all of it translates into costs that are difficult to forecast and nearly impossible to flex in real time. The larger supply-demand imbalance, he argues, is a structural feature of the industry rather than a temporary condition.
On the topic of orbital data centers, Martynek doesn’t dismiss the idea but is realistic about the timeline. Significant technical hurdles remain, including the cost of getting infrastructure into orbit, the optics required to transmit data at scale, and the challenge of dissipating heat in an environment where it simply does not radiate. His honest assessment: we are at least a decade away from making this a practical reality.
