Texas is emerging as a major data center destination,[https://www.databank.com/data-centers/dallas/] with the industry contributing 363,000 jobs and $52.6 billion to state GDP. However, the surge in facilities consuming enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes is testing the ERCOT grid like never before, particularly in Houston where CenterPoint has seen a 700% increase in developer connection requests within a year.
Data centers support nearly all modern digital activities, from social media to remote work. Texas appeals to operators due to its central location, available land, minimal regulation, and flexible power system. Peak demand in Houston could jump 30% by 2030, requiring billions in new transmission lines and substations.
DataBank emphasizes that facilities equipped with backup power generators can help relieve grid strain rather than increase it. The company views power challenges as requiring multi-year strategies, noting that new generation capacity cannot be created overnight.
Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 6 into law addressing these concerns. The legislation requires companies to pay upfront for grid upgrades, prove backup power capacity, and gives ERCOT authority to limit data center power use during emergencies, aiming to protect Texans from rising energy costs while enabling growth.
