AI has fundamentally compressed the cyberattack lifecycle. What once took days of reconnaissance and planning can now unfold in hours, as threat actors feed intelligence into AI systems that instantly recommend the most effective attack vectors and tools. DataBank CISO Mark Houpt breaks down what this acceleration really means for security leaders in a new byline for Cybersecurity Insiders.
Houpt draws an important distinction: while the speed of attacks is genuinely new, the underlying pattern isn’t. What is different this time is democratization. AI has lowered the barrier to entry so dramatically that unsophisticated actors now have access to the same capabilities as nation-state adversaries — and geography is no longer a limiting factor.
“There’s a temptation to frame AI as a fundamental turning point in cybersecurity. In some ways, it is. Security professionals who have been in this field for decades, however, have seen this pattern before.”
— Mark Houpt, CISO, DataBank
Defenders have access to the same tools, Houpt notes, but the outcome ultimately comes down to the quality of human judgment layered on top of AI platforms. For data centers specifically, the threat extends beyond the digital perimeter — drone technology and targeted strikes on power infrastructure represent an emerging physical attack vector that most enterprise security frameworks were never designed to address.
