A SAN is built from three main layers: the storage arrays that hold the data, the fabric of switches and cabling that carries traffic, and the host bus adapters in the servers that connect into the fabric. Layered on top is the management plane that handles provisioning, zoning, monitoring, and policy enforcement. Each layer needs redundancy for production use, which is why SAN deployments almost always involve dual fabrics and multipathing.
